Social Support
--------------------------------------------------------------------The purpose of this component is to ensure that the families are made aware of resources and community services available to impact their quality of life. The Centres will assist the families to access resources and community services. This may mean tha the Centres will work in cooperation and with the service providers. The ultimate goal of this component is to empower parents to access assistance and services which will support them to be active participants in their children's lives and Aboriginal Head Start.

Aboriginal Head Start centers will:

  1. identify the need for and facilitate the provision of social support to Aboriginal children and their families. Methods of social support could include:
    1. providing referrals;
    2. implementing family needs assessments;
    3. utilizing community outreach programs;
    4. providing community resource information;
    5. providing emergency assistance information; and
    6. providing crisis intervention information;
  2. develop a list of collaborative service providers, e.g. local, regional, provincial and national organizations, groups and individuals;
  3. involve local service providers in projects which could include;
    1. Canada Prenatal Nutrition Program (CPNP) projects
    2. Community Action Program for Children (CAPC) projects
    3. Aboriginal or other child and family services
    4. Crisis centers
    5. Drug and alcohol treatment centers
    6. Friendship centers
    7. Health centers or hospitals
    8. Metis organizations
    9. Aboriginal housing
    10. Aboriginal women's centers
    11. Parent resource centers
    12. Toy lending libraries
    13. Schools.
